Gothic Bronze Radiate-Head Brooch

CIRCA 6TH CENTURY A.D.

4 7/8 in. (54.5 grams, 12.4 cm).

Comprising: D-shaped headplate with five radiating beast-head knops to the rim and running scroll to the plate, shallow ribbed bow, pentagonal footplate with lattice detailing and beast-head finial, lateral cells to accept inlay; to the reverse pin-lugs and pierced lug in place. [No Reserve]

Provenance

Acquired on the European art market since the early 2000s.
From the private Northern Ireland collection of R.M.

Literature

Cf. Menghin, W., The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007, item I.8.7, for type.

Footnotes

The lack of a full catchplate to the reverse of the brooch suggests that it was intended to be sewn permanently to the garment on which it was worn and not to be detached.
