FOOTNOTES:
In the form of a Greek cross this ring would have been worn by a wealthy Byzantine nobleman or woman to express their belief in the Christian faith. This ring was made during the iconoclastic period of Byzantine art, one which saw the active destruction of figural images of religious figures such as Christ and the Virgin Mary, and which saw the use of the cross as the main religious image.
