ROMAN GOLD RING WITH INTAGLIO OF AN EMPRESS
1ST CENTURY AD
1" (24 grams, 26.10mm overall, 18.48mm internal diameter, (approximate size, British Q 3/4, USA 8 1/2, 59, Japan 17).).

A substantial gold ring with thick rounded shank that narrows to the bottom, repaired; the wide bezel is set with a amethyst intaglio engraved with the image of a empress with hair style typical of the mid to late 1st century AD.

PROVENANCE:
Acquired on the London art market prior to 1980.

PUBLISHED:
Accompanied by an Art Loss Register certificate.

FOOTNOTES:
The hairstyle is typical of the late Julio-Claudian period and possibly represents Poppaea, wife of Nero, or his mother, Agrippina the Younger.
