MEDIEVAL GOLD EPIGRAPHIC 'VANE GOTE UNE' FINGER RING
15TH CENTURY AD
1" (2.09 grams, 21 mm, internal diameter 19 mm (approximate size British R 1/2, USA 9, Europe 19.38, Japan 18)).

A delicate decorative finger ring of Continental origin, the hoop comprising raised dentilled borders enclosing the median band within panels of hatched and scrolled ornament separating epigraphic panels; the text in gothic script reading 'vane gote une', possibly translating to 'one [cheek] in vain', possibly Italian workmanship.

PROVENANCE:
Property of a European Gentleman living in London; acquired in the UK before 1980; formerly in a European collection from the 1970's.
