BYZANTINE GOLD DOVES AND CROSS FRETWORK RING
(Gold, 16.17 grams, 33.80 mm overall (approximate size British X, USA 11 1/2, Europe 26.22, Japan 25).).

Circa 9th century AD. A large openwork gold finger ring of the 'hunched shoulders' profile; the hoop formed with running vinescroll on the side faces and symmetrical geometric designs on the band; the bezel formed as an openwork running vinescroll on the sides and a top panel depicting a pair of doves with a cross within a rectangular border surrounded by a running guilloche.

PROVENANCE:
UK art market, acquired prior to 1985.
