BYZANTINE GOLD CROSS PENDANT
(Gold and garnet, 3.87 grams, 41.2 mm.).

Circa 6th-9th century AD. A gold cruciform pendant in the form of a cross bottony with repoussé panels on the arms surrounded by filigree borders; the outer edges of the cross with beaded wire borders and granule details in the terminal lobes; the centre a beaded wire ring enclosing a garnet cloison; above, a ribbed suspension loop with filigree detailing.

PROVENANCE:
UK art market, acquired prior to 1985.
