FRANKISH GOLD AND GARNET CLOISON STRAP END

Circa 5th-7th century AD. A gold strap end or tag formed as a bull-head from a triangular cloison with inset garnet below a panel with two pierced circular holes and flanked by crescentic extensions; one attachment pin still in place. Gold and garnet, 1.88 grams, 22.74 mm.

Condition
Extremely fine condition.

Provenance
From an old English collection.

Literature
Cf. Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period: Europe Without Borders.

Footnotes
