Glass in Silver-Coloured Metal Pendant

LATE 20TH CENTURY A.D.

3 in. (81 grams, 76 mm).

The scalloped frame with articulate bail, set with a glass plaque over coloured foil, displaying three robed figures arranged beside a couchant lion, floral tendrils in the field; possible maker's stamps to the bail reverse. [No Reserve]

    Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.

    The tile production increases in the second half of the sixteenth century and during the following centuries. The fragments discovered from various localities (pot-tiles, rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal panels, open-work crest tiles) were all produced in regional workshops, from the end of the 15th century or at the beginning of the 16th century. They all had diverse decorative motifs, mainly animals and geometrical or vegetal combinations, almost all of them singular finds for this study area.

    From an old English collection formed before 2000. Acquired on the UK art market.

    This item would have been fastened to the hem of a long skirt and linked to the waist; the wearer would use it to discreetly hold her dress hem clear of the ground to keep her dress clean, especially when climbing stairs or entering/leaving a carriage.
