    Under the command of Lieutenants Chard and Bromhead, a small number of British and colonial troops successfully defended the mission station from 3000 Zulu warriors. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded. The battle was made widely famous by the 1964 movie 'Zulu'.

    A 'blood chit' is a document carried by military personnel, addressed to civilians who may come across an armed-services member in difficulty (e.g. a shot-down pilot). It identifies the force to which the bearer belongs and displays a message requesting that the service member be rendered every assistance.
