Georgian Sandstone Milestone with Isle of Man Symbols
17TH-18TH CENTURY A.D.
14 1/2 in. (10.17 kg total, 37 cm including stand).
Square in plan with biconical gusset and pyramidal top; the four faces of the base carved with reserved motifs: triskele; hexafoil in a ring; ':E:'; ':B:'; mounted on a custom-made display stand.
Provenance
Acquired between the 1970s and 1980s.
From the private collection of John Watson, Cambridge, UK.

Footnotes
The triskele with a perpendicular spur at the end of each 'leg' resembles the three-leg motif associated with the Isle of Man.

The parish of Morningthorpe is situated in south Norfolk, east of Long Stratton and west of Hempnall. The parish was certainly well established by the time of the Norman Conquest, its population, land ownership and productive resources being detailed in the Domesday Book of 1086. -
