Gandharan Stucco Buddha Head

4TH CENTURY A.D.

9 1/2 in. (1.51 kg total, 24.3 cm including stand).

Modelled with serene expression and downcast eyes, elongated earlobes and hair arranged in regular curls around the ushnisha; clay core exposed at the back, mounted on a custom-made display stand.

Provenance

UK collection, 1990s.
Acquired on the UK art market, before 2000.
Private collection, Mr M.V., a London-based businessman.
