PERSIA, 20TH CENTURY A.D.

14 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. (689 grams, 37 x 26.5 cm).

With extensive use of liquid gold; polychrome painted scene of three male figures within a building engaged in conversation; three passers-by outside with faces raised to another figure on the roof; panels of calligraphic nastaliq text above and below; mounted in a glazed wooden frame.

Acquired on the UK art market, 1980s-1990s.

    Each differently sized and displaying a design in relief, including fleurs with heraldic lions within a decorative border, shell over cartouche with border of scrolling foliage, vegetal and other worn motifs. 5.9 kg total, 12.8-14.2 cm

    These glazed stove or floor tiles are similar to the ones of the great hall and the Tudor kitchens at Hampton Court Palace, made of ceramic, with a glaze to make it hard wearing and washable. Not just the furnishings, but the palaces themselves were multi-coloured, with brick walls painted red, and exposed timbers in yellow, red, green and white.
