English Norman Coins - Henry I - Canterbury / Gregori - Facing Bust Penny 1117 A.D.
BMC type 10. Obv: facing bust with HENRICVS REX A[N?] legend. Rev: cross fleury with annulet centre and +GREGORI:ON:CAN: legend for the moneyer Gregori at Canterbury mint. Good very fine for issue; small official nick at edge at 1 o'clock. Very rare; new moneyer for the type.(1.38 grams.).

Footnotes
Coins of types 12, 13 and 14 are previously recorded for this moneyer but this is the first known example for type 10. A feature of many coins of Henry I is the appearance of a small nick or cut to the edge of the coin, as seen here; this was done at the mint itself after striking due to a public lack of confidence in the coinage in general, to show that the coin was struck in good silver.
