England. Tudor, Elizabeth I AR Sixpence. 1558-1603.

Tower (London) mint; i.m: Latin cross. Fifth issue; dated 1580. (Latin cross) ELIZABETH : D .' G .' ANG .' FR .' ET : HI .' REGINA, crowned bust to left, wearing ruff; rose behind / (Latin cross) POSVI DEV .' AD-IVTORE-M • MEV '., coat-of-arms over cross fourchée; date above. North 1997; SCBC 2572. 2.93gr, 25mm, 9h.

Near Fine. Graffito cross on both sides.

PROVENANCE:
Found Yorkshire, UK.
From the private collection of Robin Sykes, Yorkshire, UK, formed since the late 1990s.

FOOTNOTES:
The two scratches in form of a cross on both sides used to display hatred for Elizabeth I by a disgruntled Catholic. Elizabeth’s elder sister, Mary, was a Catholic and this led to the persecution of Protestants during her reign (1554-58). Sixpence coins of Elizabeth I occasionally bear this type of graffiti which may have been executed by Catholics as a protest after the demise of Mary.
