Elizabethan Period Ceramic Fire Brick Group
CIRCA 16TH CENTURY A.D.
5 - 5 1/2 in. (6.4 kg total, 13-14 cm).
Comprising four bricks with raised designs: scrolling vegetation; two monograms, one a merchant's mark, in roundels divided by an object with tiered base and billeted border; male and female facing busts within dot-dash border; worn crowned shield issuing flowering vegetation. [4]

These glazed stove or floor tiles are similar to the ones of the great hall and the Tudor kitchens at Hampton Court Palace, made of ceramic, with a glaze to make it hard-wearing and washable. Not just the furnishings, but the palaces themselves were multi-coloured, with brick walls painted red, and exposed timbers in yellow, red, green and white

Found whilst searching with a metal detector in a garden in Burton Agnes, East Riding of Yorkshire, UK, on 8th January 2023, by Christopher Watson. Declared as treasure and disclaimed by the crown with Treasure reference no.2023 T41. Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.YORYM-7CD0D7. Accompanied by a copy of the report for H M Coroner no.2023 T41. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12442-225797.
The legend 'Be true til death and so shall I' is not recorded in that form in Evans's corpus (now nearly a century old), but variants such as 'Be true to me as I to thee' or Be true in heart till death depart' carry a similar sentiment. -

Painted on a wooden board with mounting slots and panels to the reverse, gessoed surface with painting of Christ entering Jerusalem on Palm Sunday riding a donkey; crowd within the city wall waiting with palm fronds, two figures laying down cloaks for the donkey to walk on; followers of Christ in gateway, each with golden nimbus; Christ with similar and letters 'ω', 'C' reversed and 'Н'; Cyrillic script title above reciting: 'Entrance of the Lord in Jerusalem'; bands of gilt ornament to the borders and corners. 1.7 kg, 31 x 36 cm

The scene, painted in the style of 19th century romantic painters, represents a well-known part of the Gospels that describe the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. He makes a grand entrance into the city on a donkey to fulfil the prophesy of Zechariah, “Tell the city of Zion, look, your king is coming to you! He is humble and rides on a donkey and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Christ is followed by his disciples and in the background citizens wave palm branches.
