ProvenanceFrom the collection of a gentleman, acquired on the London art market in the 1990s.

FootnotesFrom the fifth century B.C., mummy wrappings for the affluent frequently display lines of hieratic script—a cursive variant of Egyptian hieroglyphs used for both daily and religious writings. These often include excerpts from funerary texts like the Book of the Dead, along with prayers and invocations designed to safeguard and guide the deceased in the afterlife. These texts, sometimes accompanied by vignettes, were inscribed directly on the linen strips before or during the mummification process. Some of these bandages could be remarkably long; one example from Brussels, measuring only 6.2 cm in width, spans an incredible 26 metres.

Architectural fragment with two dressed faces; incised design comprising: vertical border to the left; a band of hieroglyphic text at the top; an arch enclosing a seated figure in profile wearing a tripartite wig and collar with curved beard, head cone and frond above; curved linear element meeting the end of the beard; traces of white, blue, red-brown and other pigments; chamfered edge pierced in modern times for mounting. 190 grams, 10.8 cm

Comprising three faience scarabs with detailed bodies and decorated undersides, featuring: a scroll border with central design consisting of a nefer, neb, Red Crown, and a striding human figure holding a flail; a scroll border with a central figure of a bowman with a Red Crown beneath; a seated figure before an offering table(?); an oval scaraboid featuring a central sun disc with opposed nefer signs flanked by hatched panels; and a plain carnelian scarab. 22.75 grams total, 15-28 mm

Designs include: a line border enclosing a decorative symmetrical scroll-work pattern; a line border enclosing a horse with papyrus clumps above and in front; deeply impressed bird and other signs behind; a line border enclosing a nwb (gold) sign flanked by Red Crowns, with a bee above flanked by coiled cobras; a line border enclosing a djed, neb, and sun disc, with narrow neb(?) signs above and below. 8.76 grams total, 12-21 mm
