Egyptian Framed Coptic Fabric Collection

CIRCA 5TH-7TH CENTURY A.D.

2 1/2 - 6 1/8 in. (578 grams total, fragments: 6.5-15.5 cm (frame: 26 x 31 cm)).

Three fragments of tabby-weave linen fabric, two with embroidered ornament, one with a woven polychrome border; mounted in a glazed wooden frame with gilt inner border. [No Reserve]

    Harpocrates is the Greek rendering of the Egyptian Hor-pa-khered, meaning 'Horus the Child'. This title refers to Horus as the divine infant of Isis and Osiris. Wearing the amulet of Harpocrates was believed to offer the same protection that Isis gave her beloved son.
