Egyptian Faience Shabti for Hor-sa-Iset
LATE PERIOD, CIRCA 4TH CENTURY B.C.
6 in. (124 grams, 15.2 cm).
Of mummiform type, wearing a tripartite wig and long plaited divine beard; holding a pick in the left hand, a hoe in the right, and the cord of a seed bag hanging over his left shoulder; standing on an integral plinth, a plain back pillar terminating at the base of the wig; two vertical panels of hieroglyphic inscription to the front, including dedication: sḥḏ wsỉr ḥr sꜢ Ꜣst, ‘The illuminated, the Osiris, Hor-sa-Iset’; mounted on a custom-made display stand.

Amulets of the L-shaped carpenter's or stonemason's set-square, usually depicted as two rectangular strips of unequal lengths meeting at a right angle, were most frequently made of dark hard stones such as haematite, as this example. Set-square amulets were believed to bestow eternal moral uprightness upon their possessor. -

Light blue faience mummiform shabti with details added in black line, adorned with a tripartite wig and collar, and the arms crossed over the chest with hands holding a pick and hoe, seed bag and water pots, the back decorated with a curved yoke with pots and a brick mould; a central panel of hieroglyphs on the lower half of the figure giving the dedication: sḥḏ wsı͗r ḳnw ḫꜤs mꜢꜤ ḫrw, ‘The illuminated one, the Osiris Qenu-khayes, true of voice’. 152 grams, 13 cm
