Comprising a double band for sleeve (segmentum) with a band of warriors side by side, each holding a sword in their raised right hand and a globe in the left; geometric borders. 122 grams, 51 x 23 cm
Acquired 1970s-1996. Property of a North American collector. London collection, 2016.
Tapestry technique on linen and wool. It is highly probable that this tapestry was part of a tunic decoration, a clavus, a segment running vertically on the breast and on the back of it. -

‘The Ancient Menagerie Collection’ formerly the property of a Cambridgeshire lady, collected since the 1990s and acquired from auctions and dealers throughout Europe and the USA, now ex London collection.
This may be a weight, since small bronze statuettes of various animals including frogs were used as counterbalances on scales.
