Egyptian and Greek Pottery Sherd Collection
MID 2ND-LATE 1ST MILLENNIUM B.C.
1 3/8 - 5 7/8 in. (1.42 kg total, 3.4-15 cm).
Comprising mainly fragments of domestic ware including: handles, bases, and fragments from the bodies of the vessels, some with decoration, one with an old inked collection note 'Jun '91(?), finaqua monticulo A9, iota pre-classic, 1000 B.C.' and another with 'EL ARMARNA'. [26, No Reserve]
ProvenanceAcquired in the 1970s, thence by descent 2012.

Rosettes, such as this lovely example, have a long history in Egyptian decorative art and were popular at most sites. This small decoration could be the central nail of a daisy pattern provided for architectural purposes, or could be an applique of furniture or dress. -

Wepwawet, the canine god, is strongly linked with Abydos and kingship. His name means 'Opener of the Ways' and may have had military connotations as someone who clears the path for his king. In funerary texts, Wepwawet guided the dead through the Underworld. The image of the god on a standard, as seen in this example, was carried in processions associated with Osiris and kingship. The balloon-like object, known as shed-shed, is mysterious but may have symbolised the royal placenta, which was considered the king's 'double'.
