Western Asiatic Cylinder Seal with Hero and Winged Griffin

2000-1600 BC

A brown jasper cylinder seal, drilled vertically for suspension; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a typed and signed scholarly note issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'The design, on a base-line, shows two pairs of contestants and fillers. In the one a hero on one knee is grappling with a rearing lion, and in the other a rearing winged griffin is attacking a horned animal on its hind legs. In the upper parts there is a crescent and star, and in the lower parts a dancing man and a seated monkey. This is an Old Babylonian seal, c. 2000-1600 B.C. It is a combination of the less usual designs of the period. It is in good condition save for a little damage to the top edge.' 5.91 grams, 22mm (3/4"). Fine condition.

The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number W-76; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; and accompanied by a copy of a typed and signed scholarly note by the Professor.
