Sold for (Inc. bp): £260
CONFEDERATE STATES, 6 X CHEMICOGRAPH BACKS INTENDED FOR 1864 ISSUES. UNCIRCULATED. This set of "notes" consists of six Chemicograph backs with designs that were intended for the 1864 issues of the $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, and $500 denominations. Back plates with these designs were ordered by the Confederate Treasury from S. Straker & Sons of London. The plates were made and shipped from London in early January 1864, only to disappear. Several more shipments were made, but none of these got through the Union blockade. Examples of the plates were found 75 years later and the prints in this lot were made from those plates. Next, the plates were donated to the Smithsonian Institution. Included with this lot is a reprint of a Philip H. Chase article on the subject that appeared in the March and April 1950 The Numismatist. Two informational sheets are also included in this lot. Also, we see the original Chase 1959 envelope. We are grading only the notes in this lot and they grade Gem Crisp Uncirculated. The total count includes six notes, two informational sheets, the Chase article, and one envelope. Circa 215mm x 93mm.
