Beardless head of satyr to left; c/m: twelve-rayed star within circular incuse / Head of lion to left, sturgeon to left in exergue, Π-A-N around; c/m: bow in bow case (cut into die?). MacDonald argues that after the application of these countermarks, coins without them were no longer considered legal tender. There are some examples of the countermarks being engraved directly into the dies, as they became a necessary feature of the design for the coins to circulate legally.
