Chinese Tang Terracotta Horse and Rider

TANG DYNASTY, 618-907 A.D.

18 in. (5.55 kg, 46 cm high).

The horse in a static pose with its head slightly turned, the rider erect with both arms bent and fists clenched to grip the reins (absent); painted fur texture to the saddle blanket.

Provenance

Ex West Country, UK, collection, 2000s.

Accompanied by thermoluminescence analysis report no.07C26042024 by Laboratory Kotalla.
This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12563-231122.
This lot has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database, and is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D’Amato.

    Both with loosely painted stemmed flowers to the outer face, the inside with a decorative scene comprising a pair of birds, possibly peacocks, one walking and the other in flight above, flowers and vegetation surrounding. 113 grams total, 10.7 cm each

    The Ca Mau shipwreck refers to a cargo of Chinese porcelain sunk between 1723 and 1735 off the coast of Vietnam. The wreck was discovered by Vietnamese fishermen in 1998. It is believed the wreck was a merchant’s junk on its way from Canton (Guangzhou) to Batavia when it caught fire and sank. The ship was carrying goods destined for Dutch traders who had limited access to China and its ports.
