Chinese Tang Terracotta Guardian

TANG DYNASTY, 618-907 A.D. OR LATER

20 1/4 in. (3.45 kg, 51.5 cm).

Modelled in the round fully armoured soldier wearing a breastplate, armguards, pauldrons and helmet with prominent crest; the armour worn over a coat, closed by a belt, with tight-fitting trousers; both hands held forwards; both feet resting on a dog; traces of pigment to face and helmet.

Ex property of a London, UK, gentleman.

    Budai was a 10th century monk, known for his laughing face and round stomach, and was named after the cloth sack that he carries under his arm. Buddhists believe him to be the incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha, who helps common people in the mortal world.
