The Ca Mau shipwreck refers to a cargo of Chinese porcelain sunk between 1723 and 1735 off the coast of Vietnam. The wreck was discovered by Vietnamese fishermen in 1998. It is believed the wreck was a merchant’s junk on its way from Canton (Guangzhou) to Batavia when it caught fire and sank. The ship was carrying goods destined for Dutch traders who had limited access to China and its ports.

From a West Country, UK, collection, 1990s. Accompanied by a thermoluminescence analysis report no.04C26042024 from Laboratory Kotalla. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12445-226799.

From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000. From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.

One of the most interesting characteristics of this pottery are the spiral designs. Spiral designs occur on vessels with and without pedestals (like our specimen). In most cases the spirals fill the entire decoration field of the body. All spiral motifs appear to have been carefully planned before being painted. They cover the portion of the vessel normally visible to the observer, and not attempt is made to carry the design of the bottom of the vase.
