Chinese Song Style Gilt Reclining Ram Statuette

SONG DYNASTY, 960-1279 A.D. OR LATER

4 1/2 in. (481 grams, 11.5 cm wide).

Formed as a reclining gilt ram, hollow to the underside, incised teardrop decoration to the body and linear details around neck and eyes.

    日本万古 Which translates to: “Japan Banko” This is a reference to Banko ware (Banko-yaki / 萬古焼), a type of traditional Japanese stoneware that originated in the 18th century in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. It is especially known for its teapots, cooking vessels, and unglazed pottery. “日本” (Nihon) = Japan “万古” (Banko) = Banko ware, literally meaning “eternity” or “ten thousand ages”.
