Chinese Pair of Terracotta Han Tomb Doors
HAN DYNASTY, 206 B.C.-220 A.D. OR LATER
45 7/8 x 14 3/4 x 4 1/2 - 45 7/8 x 15 1/8 x 4 1/2 in. (145 kg total, 116.5 x 37.5 x 11.5 - 116.5 x 38.5 x 11.5 cm).
Matched pair of doors, each a substantial rectangular block with mounting holes to the upper and lower faces; the obverse divided into three decorated panels by borders with impressed lattice patterns: above - outer columns of comas-shaped motifs, inner rows of bird, tree and goose motifs; centre - 4x4 grid of comma motifs flanking ring-handles mounted on beast-mask panels; below - outer columns of comma motifs enclosing alternating rosette and concentric rings. In the mid 15th century a freighting junk loaded with fine Vietnamese pottery sank in an area of the South China Sea called the 'Dragon’s Embrace.' This vessel is part of the shipwreck cargo recovered off the coast of Vietnam at Hoi An. The ceramics themselves were probably made in the area of Chu Dau. -
