Chinese Ming Wooden Temple Figure Seated on a Horse
MING DYNASTY, 1368-1644 A.D.
11 3/4 in. (703 grams, 29.7 cm).
Carved in the depicting a robed traveller on a donkey; the figure wearing an ankle-length robe and faceted cap, the arms bent and hands pierced to accept reins (now absent); gesso to the surface and remains of red, white and other pigment; hair applied to form the tail; underside with old Cotteril collector's label '2641.160.99 / China / Ming Dynasty / 1550-1600'. [No Reserve]

The Ca Mau shipwreck refers to a cargo of Chinese porcelain sunk between 1723 and 1735 off the coast of Vietnam. The wreck was discovered by Vietnamese fishermen in 1998. It is believed the wreck was a merchant’s junk on its way from Canton (Guangzhou) to Batavia when it caught fire and sank. The ship was carrying goods destined for Dutch traders who had limited access to China and its ports. -
