Square in plan with low L-shaped feet, domed lid; hatched fields with reserved vegetation motifs; inner face and lid with neat columns of pointillé text; the lid reading is a dedication to Mr Wong by his son and grandchildren; the base reading: 'Born 22nd January 1723, approximately 11pm (Lunar = Renyin Year of the Kangxi reign.) - Passed away 7th January 1808, approximately 3-5pm. (Lunar = Wuchen year of the Jiaqing reign.) - Laid to rest in Meizhok County - Burial direction: Southeast (Xun direction) aligned slightly eastwards. In the mid 15th century a freighting junk loaded with fine Vietnamese pottery sank in an area of the South China Sea called the 'Dragon’s Embrace.' This vessel is part of the shipwreck cargo recovered off the coast of Vietnam at Hoi An. The ceramics themselves were probably made in the area of Chu Dau. -
