Celts in Lower Danube AR Tetradrachm. Late 4th-3rd centuries BC. Imitations of Philip II of Macedon.
Laureate head of Zeus to right / ΠΛΠ, nude youth, holding palm, on horseback to right; below, Λ above torch; to lower right, monogram(?). Cf. Göbl, OTA pl.4, 18.2-3. Very Fine.(13.60gr, 23mm, 12h.).

The king's name, which may mean something like 'manly', is completely and clearly displayed on this coin. The butting bull is copied from coins of Augustus. Dr John Creighton thinks the head on the spear may be that of Commios and may refer to 'a possible cult of Commius' (Coins and power in Late Iron Age Britain, 2000, 191-93). An intriguing insight. -

The letters TA below the boar's head refer to Tasciovanos and indicate that Epaticcus comes from the court of Tasciovanos; indeed he may have been a son of Tasciovanos and younger brother of Cunobelinus.
