PIXTILOS, diademed male head (Apollo?) to right, with a horned snake-like dragon curling down from the top of his head / Nude man, holding a palm branch in his right hand and the reins with his left, riding a horse prancing to right; below, double spiral ornament. The king's name, which may mean something like 'manly', is completely and clearly displayed on this coin. The butting bull is copied from coins of Augustus. Dr John Creighton thinks the head on the spear may be that of Commios and may refer to 'a possible cult of Commius' (Coins and power in Late Iron Age Britain, 2000, 191-93). An intriguing insight. -

Near Extremely Fine. Sharply struck in golden gold, clear 'bird'. Recorded in Celtic Coin Index Online of Oxford University with reference no.CCI 01.1922.

It can surely be no accident that the two Y-shapes in this gorgeous Dutotrigan gold quarter stater closely resemble the Y-shapes seen on the late Hengistbury cast bronze coins.
