FOOTNOTES:
The Fenian Raid of 1866 was the invasion of Canada on 31 May 1866 under John O’Neill, with actions fought at Ridgeway, Fort Erie and St Armand before they retreated back to the USA after 9 June. The medal was instituted by the Canadian government from 1899 to surviving participants, with clasps for the various actions. It should be noted that the Albacore class gunboat HMS Herring (launched 1856, broken up 1865) is not included in the list of ships taking part in the Raid but HMS Heron (launched 1860, broken up Jamaica 1881) and a sister gunboat, is listed with 11 recipients – presumably an error in naming on this medal.
