Canaanite Bronze Statuette with Braided Locks of Hair

EARLY 2ND MILLENNIUM B.C.

6 in. (294 grams, 15.3 cm).

Modelled in the round standing figure in belted kilt with braided hair and flame headdress, enigmatic face with wide hollow eyes; open hands held before the chest; integral legs, bare feet and base.

Provenance

UK private collection before 2000.
Acquired on the UK art market.
Property of a London gentleman.

Accompanied by an academic report by Dr Raffaele D’Amato.
This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.12359-226971.

    Fruit were generally considered to be a symbol of sensuality, temptation and fertility; the giving and accepting of fruit may be regarded as a symbolic sexual act, or at least a prelude to marriage. It follows naturally that the pomegranate, with its innumerable fleshy seeds symbolising life and fecundity, was an attribute of Aphrodite.
