Byzantine Style Gold Cross Pendant

20TH CENTURY A.D. OR EARLIER

1 1/2 in. (5.41 grams, 39 mm).

A hollow-formed gold cruciform pendant formed as four tapering arms each with applied filigree tendrils and scrolls, granule clusters; outer face of three arms set with a small cell and inset pearl, fourth arm with flared suspension loop with filigree edges and median line of granulation; obverse with central cell, granule ornament and inset cabochon garnet.

    A two leaf (four sided) letter handwritten by Prince Edward (later king Edward VIII) on St. James's Palace letterheaded paper, accompanied by a photograph referred to in the letter showing the prince being led on horseback at a race; the letter is dated 28.3.27 and reads: 'Dear Lord Manners / Thank you / very much for your kind letter of congratulations on winning your cup - / I can assure you that I'm very proud / indeed to have won the Grenadiers' / race after 3 previous / attempts - I had / a very nice ride / round the Bicester / Pt to Pt course / the other day & the / going wasn't as / heavy as expected - / I'm sorry you weren't / able to attend the / meeting but I had / the pleasure of / seeing your daughter / there - I am sending / you a picture or / two of the race / which may amuse / you.
