Byzantine Period Terracotta Oil Lamp
CIRCA 5TH-7TH CENTURY A.D.
4 1/8 in. (104 grams, 10.6 cm).
Slipper type with a wide nozzle and a raised handle with pellet and ring-and-dot decoration to the rear, three vertical bands behind the handle, a band of pellets surrounding the filler-hole. [No Reserve]

The cap is provided with a plume-holder and two lateral slots for the ears; the scales decorate the rest of the bridle or harness. -

For the Byzantines, koutrouvia were vessels made of clay or lead in which pilgrims carried the aromatic oil (myrrh) which they acquired from the cult centres of saints.
