Byzantine Green Glazed Sgraffito Footed Bowl

13TH CENTURY A.D.

5 1/8 in. (372 grams, 13 cm).

Carinated in profile with narrow flared base, green-glazed upper body; to the inner face a central roundel with zigzag fill and a zigzag band above the gallery, to the outer face horizontal zigzag band to the shoulder; old Christie's label with '144/2 5540'.

This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.12240-222347.     The lateral incised cross motifs suggest that the spoon may have had a liturgical purpose, possibly associated with baptism.

    Comprising a pale-blue hexagonal body with cylindrical neck and rolled rim, applied tubular handle; rosette to base, the side panels with alternating motifs: two of the panels with a palm-leaf, two with large conjoining lozenges with bosses, and the other two with crosshatching, each small lozenge with a pellet to the centre. 90 grams, 16 cm
