Byzantine Gold Pendant with Glass Centre

6TH CENTURY A.D.

1 3/4 in. (10.57 grams, 46 mm).

Discoid plaque with radiating granule clusters to the rim, central cell with inset iridescent glass cabochon, suspension loop above and five more below to attach dangles.

Ex private European collection, 1980s.
Private collection, Switzerland, acquired in 1999.

    The complex letter monograms seen on these rings are sometimes referred to as 'merchant's marks' and would normally be a personal mark giving a name or phrase of significance to the owner. In this case it seems belonging to a Magistrate with consular rank, the Hypatos.
