Byzantine Bronze Belt Link with Christ and Saint

6TH-8TH CENTURY A.D.

1 1/4 in. (5.32 grams, 33 mm).

Discoid in plan with raised border and lateral attachment lugs; obverse with nimbate bust of Christ flanked by 'IC XC' legend; reverse with nimbate figure in orans pose.

Acquired from an EU collector living in London.

    The chain is a multiple 'loop-in-loop' type, a general type of necklace, especially in use in the Romano-Egyptian Jewellery of 3rd-7th century A.D. The early examples were done in Alexandria and the production lasted until the Arab conquest of 641 A.D.

    Hollow-formed cross fragment with low-relief ornament; obverse with facing veiled female bust within a ropework tondo, cruciform design to the lower arm and second tondo with facing bearded bust, foliage to the lateral arms; reverse with geometric saltire bands; knop finials to the arms (two present) and slots for attachment of additional features. 153 grams, 13.8 cm
