ROMAN BRONZE RETIARIUS GLADIATOR STATUETTE
1ST CENTURY AD
3 1/4" (109 grams, 82mm including stand).

A cast figurine of a retiarius (net-fighter) gladiator advancing left, wearing low boots and with loincloth held in place by a wide belt and bare-headed; large galerus flange neck-protector to the left shoulder; right arm extended, left hand hollow; mounted on a custom-made stand.

PROVENANCE:
UK art market, acquired prior to 1980.

FOOTNOTES:
Retiarii were developed during the Augustan era; they often fought the gladiatorial types of Secutores or Myrmillones.
