Bronze Grand Tour Bust of Philosopher
ITALY, LATE 19TH CENTURY A.D.
5 1/8 in. (633 grams, 13.1 cm).
Miniature copy of a bust of Plato or Dionysos, from the Roman Villa dei Paperi at Herculanium; hollow-formed on a socle base, the hair gathered and contained by a brow-band; downcast expression and head tilted.

London gentleman, acquired in the 1970s.

Footnotes
The Swiss archaeologist Karl Weber discovered the original bronze bust around 1750 during his excavations in the Villa dei Papiri, near Herculaneum in the Gulf of Naples.
