ISLAMIC BRONZE CALLIGRAPHIC SILVER-INLAID EWER
SELJUK EMPIRE, 11TH-14TH CENTURY AD
18 3/4" (3.2 kg, 48 cm).

A bronze ewer, bell-shaped in profile with flared base, curled handle and facetted spout; to the base, a band of running dogs; to the sides of the body, two silver-inlaid bands of calligraphic text framing a central frieze of arabesque scrolls with horsemen, musicians and scale-operators; to the shoulder a frieze of horsemen with bow, sword, lance, sword-and-shield with palmette motifs between; to the upper face of the shoulder a band of calligraphic text; the spout tubular with recumbent felines to the sides and another above the spout; the handle flat-section with inlaid vinescroll motifs, collared lug to the top.

PROVENANCE:
Acquired on the London art market in the 1960s.

CONDITION
