Bronze Age Massive Brooch with Pendants

11TH-10TH CENTURY BC

15 3/4" (855 grams, 40cm).

Believed to be the largest known bronze brooch of its type known to exist, formed as two lozenge-section bars with a tight spiral to each end, larger median spiral with coiled spring and wound catch; eight openwork vertical plaques each with a stylised duck above and loop, pair of rings twenty-three sword-shaped pendants and one chevron-shaped.

Provenance

Property of a German lady living in London, acquired from Gorny & Mosch, auction 198, 29 June 2011, lot 54; previously property of an English professional, acquired before 1970s. Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. Also accompanied by a copy of positive metallurgic analytical results, written by Metallurgist Dr. Peter Northover (ex Department of Materials, Materials Science-Based Archaeology Group & Department of Materials, University of Oxford) and a copy of the original invoice.
