Plano-convex in section with a narrow butt and a broad cutting edge. [No Reserve]
ProvenanceFrom the collection of Richard Widdowson.
Richard owned an antiquity shop in Southern England and amassed a great and varied Stone Age collection.
Purchased from Mr Widdowson in the 1980s and then more recently from a collector in the UK.

Found St Même, Charente, France, with old inked label 'St Même, Charente, B.Lanceols' (Biface Lanceolate), Acheuleen Supérieur.' Acquired from the UK estate sale of famous musician, Victor Brox (1940-1923); his prehistoric artefacts collection created during the 1980s and 1990s. -

Lentoid in section and an irregular rectangle in plan with a smoothed handgrip to the rear; old faded collector's label. 490 grams, 12.7 cm
From the Sahara. Ex old German collection formed in the 1970s. Purchased on the European art market.
Oldowan tools are the oldest known stone tool industry, dating from approximately 2.6 to 1.7 million years ago (with some evidence at 2.9 Ma). Primarily associated with Homo habilis, these simple tools (choppers, flakes, hammerstones) were used for cutting, scraping, and butchering. They were largely found in East Africa, with key sites at Olduvai Gorge. Made from quartzite with minimal removals to form a direct chopping edge. -

French Stone Age Knapped Flint Cordate Handaxe
Late Middle Palaeolithic, circa 160,000-40,000 В.Р.Sold for (Inc. bp): £85
Cordate handaxe made on a large struck flake, dorsal face completely flaked and the ventral surface with several large removals opposite the striking platform to form a grip; the rest of the surface left smooth as struck; slight 'S' twist visible in profile. 287 grams, 12.2 cm
From a collection formed between 1919-1940 by Mr Maurice Chevais (1880-1943) and subsequently purchased on the French art market.
