Late Roman Bow Brooch with Cross

4th-7th century AD

A bronze bow brooch with bulb to either side of head, deep bow with incised designs continuing onto the flared rectangular footplate, with incised cross, returned foot forming catchplate to the reverse and coils around the body of the brooch; pin lug, pin and catchplate to reverse. 5.3 grams, 43mm (1 3/4"). Very fine condition. [No Reserve]

Provenance
From an Essex antiques gallery; formerly in a 1980s private collection.

Literature
Cf. Wamser, HvL., Die Welt Von Byzanz- Europas Ostliches Erbe, Germany, 2005, p.277, item 430, for a similar example.

Footnotes
Believed to be part of male dress exclusively in the Byzantine Balkan provinces. The majority of such items are settlement finds. A very similar example to the brooch offered here was found at the fortress Prahovo (Aquis), and a second example at the fortified palace complex at Gamzigrad.
