GREEK APULIAN BELL KRATER WITH LADIES OF FASHION
4TH CENTURY BC
12 1/2" (3.4 kg, 32 cm).

A red-figure ceramic bell krater with pedestal base, bell-shaped body and broad everted rim; the rim with red rings to the interior and a band of stylised olive leaves to the underside of the exterior; the body with the head of a lady of fashion to one side, facing left, her hair dressed in a ribboned sakkos with stephane; a string of black beads to her neck, a white earring with pendant drops to her ear; to the other side the head of a lady of fashion facing left, her hair dressed in a ribboned sakkos with stephane; a string of black beads to her neck, a white hoop earring to the ear; below, a red band with black wave pattern; palmettes below the handles; red bands to the base.

PROVENANCE:
From the estate of a deceased North Country collector, acquired Astarte Gallery, Mayfair, UK, in the 1980s.
