Anglo-Saxon, Kings of All England. Aethelred II AR Viking Imitation Penny.

Diademed bust to right / Design deriving from prototype of Latin cross with inverted omega above and pendentives hanging from either end of crossbar; pellets in either void of omega, reversed R and pellet under arcs; [cross above], three(?) annulets around. Unpublished in the most references. 0.88gr, 11mm, 12h.

Very Fine. Exceedingly rare. Apparently unpublished.

Found White Waltham, Windsor and Maidenhead, UK, on Sunday 1st September 2019. Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.BERK-3BFF5F.

Georges Depeyrot attributes these coins to Bishop Ragnecapdus because of the presence of an R on the shaft of the cross, but they could just as easily belong to Bishop Ratbertus, as the motif on the reverse side is similar to those he attributes to Merfridus, who is chronologically closer to Ratbertus.

Very Fine. Lustrous metal, hairline crack, Viking peck marks to the reverse. Extremely Rare.
