Anglo-Saxon Eadwig - Winchester? / Frithemund - Unique Two Line Penny
955-959 AD. Obv: small cross with +EADVVIG REX legend. Rev: two line inscription of FRDEM / VNDMO with contraction bar above MO for the moneyer Frithemund (previously known in the reign of Edgar at Winchester mint) with three small crosses at centre and floral ornament above and below. 1.40 grams.
About as struck, some loss to edge beyond outer circle. Unique.

Found West Sussex, UK, 2013; recorded with Early Medieval Corpus, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

FOOTNOTES:
This coin provides a new moneyer and a new reverse type, a further variant of the two-line type, for the coinage of Eadwig. The reverse reads FRÐEM / VND MO, indicating that the moneyer is Frithemund, who has been previously recorded at Winchester in the almost contemporaneous Circumscription Cross coinage of Edgar (957/9-975), and the mint of this new coin may also be Winchester. The mark or symbol above and below the reverse inscription is of mirrored floral (or possibly Mercian 'm'?) form and is very different from the rosettes of pellets, trefoils of pellets or cosses previously recorded for this reign.
