Anglo-Saxon Coins - Ecgberht of Wessex - Winchester / Bosa - SAXON Monogram Penny

802-839 AD, BMC xviii. Obv: SAXON monogram with +ECGBEORHT REX legend. Rev: central cross with +BOZA MONETA legend for the moneyer Bosa at a south-western mint (believed to be Winchester). 1.26 grams.

Very fine; small striking split at edge. Very rare; the dies apparently not previously recorded, thus unique in this regard.

Found near Wimborne, Dorset, UK, February 2014.

S. 1041; N. 589; Naismith type W5a-b (different dies); cf. EMC 2011.0224 (different dies).

FOOTNOTES:
Naismith records two examples of this type for the moneyer (one is the British Museum specimen, BMC, 21) and a third is listed in the Early Medieval Corpus (EMC 2011.0224); all from different dies; the specimen offered here appears to be the fourth recorded.
