Anglo-Saxon Bronze Strap End with Beast Finial

8TH-9TH CENTURY A.D.

2 1/8 in. (6.81 grams, 55 mm).

Rectangular-section body with separate plate with two pins soldered to the underside, beast-head terminal with triangular ears placed along the flat sides, ridged brow, and trumpet-shaped muzzle. [No Reserve]

Acquired on the UK art market in the 1970s-1990s.
Property of a Nottinghamshire, UK, gentleman.

    The brooch is classified as Penn and Brugmann's SM2 type, small-long with trefoil headplate; most of its features can be paralleled from the cruciform brooch typology.
